Services
Walstead Mertsching provides a broad range of legal services to individuals and businesses throughout Washington, Oregon, and the nation.
Walstead Mertsching PS traces its beginnings to warly 1925 when Howard J. Atwell (1880-1962) and Ronald Moore (1897-1968) opened an office on the second floor of the old Masonic Building in Kelso, Washington.
Atwell left the firm to become a Cowlitz County Superior Court Judge in 1934, and Moore continued as a sole practitioner.
Jerome R. Walstead (1913-1981) joined Moore as an associate in 1946, after serving in the judge Advocate General Corps of the U.S. Army during World War II.
Michael A. Claxton joined the firm in 1995 and has been a shareholder since 1999.
He concentrates his practice in the areas of estate planning, probate, guardianships, elder law, and business/corporate matters.
He is admitted to the Washington and Oregon State bar associations, as well as to the Western Washington U.S. District Court.
Mr. Claxton received his law degree from Willamette University, graduating cum laude.
He also has a Masters of Business Administration from Portland State University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Indiana University.
Maggie is from the local area and a graduate of Kelso High School.
After obtaining her degree in English Literature and Dance from the University of Washington she went on to attend Willamette University College of Law where she earned her Juris Doctorate.
During her time at Willamette, she served as the Managing Editor for Willamette Law Review, Editor-in-Chief for the Willamette Social Justice and Equity Journal, and served as a judicial extern for the Judge You at the U.S District of Oregon.
The attorneys of Walstead Mertsching are available to serve as mediators and arbitrators for non-judicial resolution of a wide-range of disputes throughout Washington & Oregon.
Through mediation and arbitration, our experienced attorneys can minimize the cost of resolving conflicts in cases involving personal injuries, business disputes, employment conflicts, and real estate disputes.
Because our mediators and arbitrators continue to maintain active legal practices in their areas of practice, they possess current knowledge of the legal standards at issue in the disputes brought to mediation or arbitration.
