John Burns grew up in Wadesboro, North Carolina.
He graduated from Bowman High School in 1974, and went to The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he majored in Business Administration and graduated in 1978.
After working for American Bank and Trust Co. for two years, he then went to Campbell Law School where he was on the Law Review, and served as the Business Editor.
Upon graduation in 1983, he went to work for Thomas, Harrington and Beidler, in Monroe, NC.
In 1987 he partnered with Charles D. Humphries, until 1991.
