Val Whitley has been a solo attorney practitioner since 1995 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has been practicing law in New Mexico since 1989. He initially put in a very tough but good 6 years as a trial attorney with the State Public Defender in Santa Fe where he did primarily serious felony crimes (including Homicide and Rape cases) for over 5 of those years.
After leaving the Public Defender, he continued to do contract work for the Public Defender in all types of felonies as well as capital crimes (Homicide). He has handled and tried Homicide cases in the First Judicial District (Santa Fe, Rio Arriba counties) as well as in Taos, Albuquerque and Farmington. Mr. Whitley has also done work in some Tribal Courts in the state.
He no longer handles contract work with the State Public Defender but he is on the Criminal Justice Act Panel (CJA) for the Federal District Court District of New Mexico. This panel of attorneys are appointed by the Federal Court to handle indigent clients before the Court.
