Services
Child support is based on a formula.
The formal uses both parties' net incomes.
Child support has three components.
One is the actual weekly amount.
The second is work related childcare and the third is uninsured medical expenses, which are apportioned between both parties.
There are certain reasons why someone could be ordered to pay more or less than what the child support requires.
For instance, if you have shared physical custody, the court could reduce your support payment if you are the payor.
Contempts refer to violations of court orders.
If someone is found to have willfully or intentionally violated a court order, a Judge could order that person to jail.
The Judge could award attorney's fees to the party who brought the contempt.
If you are ever in a position where you simply cannot comply with a court order, you should consider filing a motion for modification, which is a change in the order.
Termination of parental rights refers to a severing of the legal relationship between a parent and child.
This is a matter handled in the probate court.
A TPR, as we call it, can be filed for certain reasons, including a parent's failure to maintain a certain relationship with a child or to show the love, care and concern that a child should be given.
What is the difference between a legal separation and divorce?
A legal separation is not required in Connecticut in order to be considered separated (in contrast to New York).
One can obtain, however, a legal separation and there are benefits to doing so.
This involves the same process as a divorce, except that the marriage is not dissolved at the end, although a formal separation agreement is in place detailing payment of bills, division of assets, custody arrangements, etc.
The benefit is that under certain circumstances, the parties can remain on the same health insurance plan without a change in cost.
All official court forms for the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch may be found on their website.
For convenience, we have listed below two important documents with regards to divorce proceedings.
These forms may also be picked up at any of the state courthouses.
Brochure JDP-FM-151: Parenting Education Programs Brochure, Rev. 9/05 contains information for everyone with minor children seeking divorce.
All parents of minor children cannot get a divorce until they have taken a parenting education course.
