Criminal matters are cases that are brought on behalf of the State of Indiana, and allege that a person has committed a crime.
In those types of cases, the State of Indiana has the burden to prove the person guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt."
Civil matters have a much wider scope.
They can include such things as wills and estates; lawsuits resulting from accidents (Car / Truck / Motorcycle) / personal injury or contract actions; traffic infractions; family law (Divorce, Custody, Visitation, Child Support); guardianships; adoptions; child welfare; real estate; corporations; and many other things that do not involve the possibility of going to jail.
