Services
While my profession is an attorney, my most important job is that of father to my daughters.
With the values that I place on my own family, the work I do in helping my clients and their families is reinforced.
I was born and raised in rural southern Iowa, where I met and married my high school sweetheart.
My parents were ideal role models with their strong work ethic.
My dad worked for a utility company as lineman for over 40 years, and also operated a farm as a "hobby" which became much more than that.
I was born, raised and continue to reside in Urbandale, Iowa.
In my free time, I enjoy cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with my family and my "foster-fail" dog, Bo.
Prior to joining Gardner Law Firm, I was a student attorney at Drake Legal Clinic and Iowa Legal Aid.
As a student attorney, I assisted in representing clients in a variety of civil matters.
During law school, I also clerked for a real estate law firm in Urbandale and at Iowa State Bank in the Trust Department.
Estate planning is not just for the elderly.
Ensuring the financial safety and protection of your family is an important goal that we all seek.
These are all basic questions that are addressed in the planning process.
There are many different methods used for estate planning, ranging from a basic will to a living trust to a family limited liability company.
I serve as a member of various professional organizations and legal committees associated with estate planning issues in Iowa.
In addition, I am a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars and retirement planning seminars.
A Will is a legal document that you create during your life that controls certain matters after you die.
While it is not required that you have a will, they are numerous reasons why most individuals should have a will.
Regular surveys conducted by various organizations repeatedly reveal that half or more of the adult population in the United States does not have a will.
There are examples of numerous public figures that didn't have a will (for example, John Denver and Sonny Bono) and many others that had outdated wills or poor planning.
A trust instrument is basically a descriptive written plan which delays and controls the ultimate distribution and management of your assets.
After your death or incapacity, the person you designate as a trustee will carry out your written intentions.
If the beneficiaries of a plan need assistance with financial matters, due to either age issues, creditor issues, marital concerns or spendthrift risk, a trust is a mechanism that addresses that risk in order to preserve and protect the assets for the beneficiary, without placing the assets at risk.
