Services
There are laws in Indiana that allow for criminal records to be expunged, that is erased, or to limit access to the records.
This can be very important and helpful if you have a record and are applying for jobs or housing, or anything that involves a criminal background check.
If you have an arrest record - where you were arrested but never convicted - in some circumstances, it is possible to get an expungement.
Meaning that the entire record is erased as if it never happened.
There are only limited circumstances when a true expungement is available.
People sometimes ask me about a motion for discovery.
A motion for discovery is just a request for a copy of or at least an opportunity to view all of the state's evidence against you before the trial.
Discovery is very important.
It is the only way that you and your lawyer can evaluate the state's case.
Without discovery, it is impossible for your attorney to advise you about your chances of success at trial or whether you should plead guilty or accept a plea agreement.
People have all sorts of different ideas about plea bargaining.
But it is the way most criminal cases are resolved - just like most civil cases are resolved by settlement agreement.
The benefits of a plea bargain to a defendant in a criminal case primarily involve certainty.
Psychologically it is very hard to face the unknown.
A jury trial always involves lots of uncertainty - maybe you'll be acquitted, or maybe you'll be found guilty.
With a plea agreement, in many cases you'll be able to know what is going to happen.
If you have been injured and someone else was at fault or was negligent - that is, they failed to do something that they should have done or they did something that they should not have done - it's important for you to speak with an attorney.
Insurance company employees generally aren't bad people but it's their job to pay out as little as possible.
They have a lot of training and experience with handling cases just like yours.
You need a professional on your side.
You need a lawyer who has experience with similar cases and a lawyer who can take your case to trial if necessary.
Everyone who owns real estate in Indiana is required to pay taxes to their county treasurer each year.
Usually tax payments are due in May and in November.
When tax payments become delinquent, the county will eventually hold an auction where people buy tax sale certificates.
A tax sale certificate amounts to a lien against a piece of property.
It entitles the owner of the tax sale certificate to receive either the amount that he paid for the certificate plus certain expenses - like attorney fees - plus interest.
