We help survivors of violence in family court lawyers in Oneida County (Utica), and Broome County (Binghamton).
We help senior citizens with elder law and estate planning.
We help people stay in their homes with mortgage and foreclosure counsel and advice.
More than ever, your donation is needed to ensure that people in upstate New York are not denied equal justice under the law.
The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. may not expend any funds for any activity prohibited by the Legal Services Corporation Act, 43 U.S.C. 2996 et seq.
Or by Public Law 104-134.
Through funding from local Offices for Aging (OFA), we provide free legal advice and representation to seniors ages 60 and over on civil (non-criminal) legal matters.
Our income or resource limits, do not apply when cases are verified to us by an Office of the Aging.
We handle many different legal problems for seniors, including consumer problems, family matters, access to healthcare, public benefits issues, housing problems, future planning (for example wills, living wills, health care proxies, powers of attorney, and Medicaid planning), elder abuse, and many other legal issues.
Our Central New York Victim Assistance Project (VAP) provides free civil (non-criminal) legal services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
Clients generally must have low income and low resources, but we make exceptions in some cases.
Legal problems we handle include family matters such as orders of protection, divorces, separations, child custody, and child support.
We also handle other legal problems that allow survivors to become independent from their abusers, such as problems with finances, housing, public benefits, access to healthcare, immigration and other legal problems.
We provide free legal representation to clients who have been denied or terminated from SSD or SSI benefits.
Because we get a large number of requests for representation, we cannot take every case.
We will investigate your case for merit and determine if we are able to represent you at your hearing.
If we can't represent you, please call the Statewide Lawyer Referral Hotline at 1-800-342-3661 for help finding a private lawyer.
Private lawyers usually do not charge any fees unless they win your case.
