He is married to Jeannette Theriot Knoll, a retired Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, with whom he has five sons: Triston, Eddie, Jr., Sonny, Blake and Jonathan.
In 1959, Eddie graduated from Simmesport High School and served as President of the Future Farmers of America for the State of Louisiana until 1960.
He received an undergraduate degree in Political Science from Louisiana State University and A & M College in 1963, and a juris doctorate from Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans in 1966, where he was a member of the Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity.
