Arita graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree before attending Loyola University New Orleans' College of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree and special certificates in common law and international law. Mrs. Bohannan's work has been published in the Loyola Law Review, and in 2002 was a speaker at the Symposium against Domestic Violence.
She was the winner of the 2001 Association of Trial Attorneys' in-house trial competition. She worked briefly as a law clerk for the Orleans Parish's district attorney's office and as a clinical attorney for Loyola law school, the latter with the Indigent Defender Board. She is a member of several boards, including those serving victims of domestic and sexual violence, and often donates hours of pro bono work to those in need.
