The Law Office of Nancy Driscoll Stroup represents clients throughout the State of Alaska in all types of bankruptcy cases. Nancy graduated from the University of Michigan in 1988 and the Washington College of Law at American University in 1991.
During her career, she has worked as an intern & law clerk for the U.S. Department of Justice Tax and Criminal Divisions in Wash, DC; as a judicial law clerk for the Alaska Superior Court in Ketchikan; as an Assistant Public Defender in Barrow and Palmer; as a Legal Aid attorney; and as a general practitioner.
She has represented clients in a wide variety of types of cases including civil and criminal appeals, criminal defense (juvenile, misdemeanor, felonies & jury trials), family law (divorce, custody, adoption, Child in Need of Aid), administrative law (social security and benefits hearings), personal injury (she spent one year working at the largest personal injury firm in Alaska), landlord-tenant disputes, and wills/probate.
The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Alaska is located in downtown Anchorage in the "Old Federal Building" at 625 West 4th Avenue.
This building is across the street from the Fourth Avenue Theater and the Anchorage Visitor's Center.
The Bankruptcy Court is on the left side of the building while the Federal Lands office is located on the right side.
You are required to go through security (a metal detector) and show a photo ID in order to enter the building.
There is street parking with meters.
Consumers and small business owners can choose from among several types of bankruptcy "chapters, " including Chapter 7, Chapter 11, Chapter 12, and Chapter 13, per the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
CHAPTER 7 - is a "liquidation."
It is by far the most popular choice for individuals.
It may also be used by corporations.
However, despite the word liquidation, you will be able to keep personal and household property, including vehicles, up to certain limits.
You may also be able to retain a home.
With a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you fully disclose your property, assets, debts and financial activities over the past several years.
Continue to pay your routine bills.
Continue to make house and vehicle payments if you want to retain those items.
Pay your rent if you have a lease.
Pay your cell phone bill if you have a contract.
However - you do NOT have to continue to pay credit card or medical bills or loan repayments (except student loans.).
You are allowed to hold a yard sale or sell smaller items to buy necessities or pay rent/utilities.
Do not drain retirement funds.
In most cases, you are allowed to keep your retirement accounts despite a bankruptcy filing.
AND YOU ARE NOT WITHIN A REASONABLE DRIVING DISTANCE TO ANCHORAGE, YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO TRAVEL TO ANCHORAGE for your Bankruptcy case.
