Welcome to the website of Michael Beraha, divorce and family law attorney. My office is located in Boynton Beach. I am a longstanding member of the Family Law and Trial Lawyers sections of The Florida Bar. I have been practicing law in Palm Beach and Broward County for over 30 years. More importantly, I am a lawyer that cares about and has compassion for my clients.

My practice is exclusive to divorce, family law and related matters. I make every effort to resolve your case through mutual agreement and settlement in order to minimize the time, trauma and expense of divorce proceedings. These efforts are usually successful. However, in a certain number of cases, due to various factors, settlement is not possible, and the case must be taken to trial for a judge to decide.

In all cases, whether settled or taken to trial, it is my goal to work with you in order to help you achieve your desired outcome in the most efficient and cost-effective way. In either event, and especially in case of trial, you will benefit from my 30 years of experience.

The official term for divorce in Florida is dissolution of marriage.
Florida is one of the many states that has abolished fault as a grounds for divorce.
All that is required to establish the grounds necessary for divorce is that the marriage be irretrievably broken.
Either spouse can file for the dissolution of marriage.
All that has to be proven in order to obtain a divorce is that a valid marriage exists, one party has been a Florida resident for more than six months immediately preceding the file of the petition, and that the marriage is irretrievably broken.
In divorce cases involving minor children, the court deals with those issues first.
It is the public policy of the state of Florida to ensure that each minor child has frequent and continuing contact with both parents after the parents have separated or divorced, and to encourage parents to share the rights and responsibilities of childrearing.
The father is given the same consideration as the mother in determining parental responsibility and timesharing regardless of the child's age or sex.
This concept of shared parental responsibility has replaced the old traditional concepts of custody and visitation that were the prior law.
After equitable distribution has been made, the court may consider an award of alimony.
The court may grant alimony to either the husband or the wife.
Alimony may be bridge-the-gap, rehabilitative, durational or permanent in nature or any combination of these forms.
In any award of alimony, the court may order periodic payments, payments in lump sum or both.
Bridge-the-gap alimony may be awarded to assist a party by providing support to allow the party to make a transition from being married to being single.
