Carl R. Gold became a lawyer because he wanted to help people from all walks of life. As a result, he is experienced in a wide variety of legal fields. He has recovered millions of dollars in personal injury claims for clients, and represented thousands of criminal defendants in every level of the judicial system in Maryland. He routinely represents young people in school discipline cases and special education matters.

Additionally, he has handled thousands of labor and employment cases on behalf of both individuals and employers, from Fortune 100 companies to small local businesses. Mr. Gold was recently inducted as a Distinguished Member of the Towson University chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Mr. Gold was recognized for his pro bono work with Maryland Volunteer Lawyer Services and with the Lawyer Referral Service of the Baltimore County Bar.

I handle sexual assault and misconduct cases at colleges and universities throughout the country.
I was recently asked to help train faculty, staff and students from a consortium of Maryland colleges and universities how to handle sexual assault cases on campus.
I provided the defense point of view.
My presentation outline is below.
Colleges and universities are between a rock and a hard place as they try to comply with Federal law mandates while avoiding liability for violating the Constitutional rights of students accused of sexual assault or misconduct.
I recently tried, and won, a driving while intoxicated case in the District Court.
Every good criminal defense lawyer examines the facts of every case to see if it is defensible before ever considering a plea.
In this case I had a client from out of state who after a long day of work stopped for a few drinks before heading home.
A police officer working in the area received two calls from his dispatcher advising that a truck matching my client's vehicle description was driving erratically.
Interestingly, in his report, the officer only indicated there was one call.
Since the sanctions against students for sometimes even minor behavior are so Draconian, I have often been able to successfully argue that if school, faculty and staff do not precisely follow the system's own rules, charges against a student cannot be upheld.
For example, in reaction to numerous cases where I successfully challenged expulsions and suspensions due to a failure of the school to timely provide parents with the charges and evidence against students, the rules now provide that within twenty-four hours of the hearing, [t]he student and the parent/guardian shall be notified.
Whether you find solace in the words of Virgil, Orson Scott Card or Alistair McCall Smith, as I do, doing something, anything to keep alive the memory of a lost friend and cherished mentor is a selfish yet necessary endeavor.
It was the prettiest day of the year.
Chiseled skies, crisp clouds, enticing water and warm sand made it easy to swim and celebrate absent friends.
The Honorable Judge Kathleen Cox was our leader ably assisted by her daughters, Casey and Jennifer.
Casey and Jennifer were both recognized by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network as leading fundraisers.
The longer I practice law in Baltimore County, the more joy I get from the collegiality of my Bar Association colleagues.
In so many ways we are one big family.
To paraphrase John Donne, no one is an island.
Each of us is a part of the whole, a part of the main.
When the bell tolls for any of us, it tolls for all of us.
That is why it hurts so much when we lose one of our own.
We all try to find ways to deal with the pain of loss differently, to rage against the unfairness of those taken before their time.
