During his military service in the US Army infantry during World War II, First Lieutenant Miller was critically injured and returned to the United States to recuperate at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital.
Upon his discharge, rather than return back east where he was raised, he decided to remain in the Denver metropolitan area to attend the University of Denver and the Westminster Law School, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
