After Bernie H. Ellis, Sr. was wounded in WWII, he returned home and told his father of his desire to follow his father's footsteps and go to medical school.
Bernie's father put every penny he thought it would take to enroll him in medical school, but told him 'not to touch a dime' if he wouldn't' "go when they call."

One of Martin's passions is his involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee (BBBS ET) Martin L. Ellis and Bill Jolly organized and led three fundraising "Big Swims" to raise funds to support the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee.
The first two swims were 8 mile long swims in Norris Lake.
The third was an "Escape from Alcatraz Swim" from Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay.
