We will conclude the 2021 Workshop at 5 PM. We look forward to being with you and will provide you with regular updates in the coming months. It took many years, and lots of hard work on my part, but today I have rebuilt a life, a marriage, and a career to be proud of. FLA did that for me. In an effort to achieve it's mission, FLA, through its over 300 volunteer legal professionals, has promoted the formation of over 30 weekly support groups throughout Florida for lawyers, judges, and law students.

Some of these groups focus on substance abuse issues and are attended by legal professionals in recovery or who wish to learn more about the recovery process.
Services
FLA provides confidential assistance and support to lawyers, judges and law students who have been negatively affected in their ability to function in their careers and personal lives by alcohol, drugs, mental health issues, or cognitive decline.
FLA fosters identification, intervention and recovery by providing assessments, referrals, education and maintaining a supportive network of recovering legal professionals.
A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Dan graduated from Yale University in 1976 and The University of Iowa College of Law in 1979.
Following a two-year clerkship with the Chief Judge of the US District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, Dan practiced law in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for 5 years before moving to Washington, DC.
There Dan began what is now a more than three decades-long stint as a lawyer in recovery.
In Washington, he engaged in a government relations career where he headed up the US Government Relations departments of a number of companies in the financial services and technology sectors before moving full-time to South Florida in 2017.
Florida Lawyers Assistance, Inc. is a non-profit corporation formed in 1986 in response to the Florida Supreme Court's mandate that a program be created to identify and offer assistance to bar members who suffer from substance abuse, mental health, or other disorders which negatively affect their lives and careers (Bar Rule 2-9.11).
FLA is independent of The Florida Bar, although it does receive funding from that organization.
Paramount to FLA is the protection of confidentiality for those attorneys who contact FLA for help.
Once a lawyer, judge or law student signs a contract with FLA, they will be assigned a monitor/mentor to help them through the program.
Individuals who volunteer to act as Florida Lawyers Assistance monitors play a critical role in assisting attorneys and bar applicants who need to prove their rehabilitation and recovery to The Florida Bar or Florida Board of Bar Examiners.
They are the FLA representatives who likely will have the greatest personal contact with lawyers and applicants entering into an FLA contract.
FLA provides confidential support to law students for problems with stress, anxiety, depression, alcohol and substance use, and other mental health disorders.
We work with administrators, professors and students from all Florida law schools to provide health and wellness counseling, education related to Florida Bar character and fitness requirements, peer and group support, referrals to quality professionals and programs, and assistance for needed care.
