Law Offices Of Walter Metzen & Associates
Our firm brings over 28 years of experience and more than 20,000 filed bankruptcy cases to the table to work for you. I am Walter A. Metzen, a Board Certified Specialist in Consumer Bankruptcy. I have practiced personal bankruptcy in Michigan for over 28 years and have represented over 20,000 bankruptcy clients wipe out hundreds of millions dollars of debt during that time.

I specialize in helping individuals and married couples who are in financial distress. I enjoy seeing my clients breathe a huge sigh of relief at my initial office consultation, when I tell them that I can help them. I enjoy seeing the smiles on my client's faces after their bankruptcy hearing. I like hearing how their lives have improved dramatically after their bankruptcy filing.

When you hire my bankruptcy law office to represent you, you will not sit down with a legal assistant or paralegal. You will meet with an experienced bankruptcy attorney who has been to bankruptcy court thousands of times and has the legal experience to handle your particular bankruptcy matter.
Services
My goal is to provide you with honest legal advice to allow you to make an informed decision as to how best to deal with your creditors and if bankruptcy is an option, which Chapter might be the best option for you.
My office's philosophy is simple, to provide quality bankruptcy legal services at a reasonable price.
As a specialist in consumer bankruptcy in Michigan, I limit my practice only to bankruptcy matters with primary focus on individuals and married couples with consumer or small business related debt.
A personal bankruptcy is a federal legal proceeding designed to help people overcome the pressures that financial problems due to overwhelming debt can cause.
There are basically two forms of bankruptcy for consumers under the bankruptcy code, Chapter 7, in which you pay nothing to your creditors, and Chapter 13, which is a court supervised repayment plan in which you simply pay what you can afford to your creditors, over a 3 to 5 year time period.
Both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 can be filed either by individuals or married couples.
Chapter 7 bankruptcy is what most people think of when they think of bankruptcy.
Your debt is wiped out by order of the bankruptcy court.
You never have to pay it back, even if you win the Powerball Lottery down the road.
You have to "qualify" with regard to your household income to file a Chapter 7, but for most people who come into my office, this is not a problem.
Most of the cases I file and in fact most of the cases filed nationwide are Chapter 7 bankruptcies.
Chapter 7 is meant to provide the debtor (person or married couple filing the case) a fresh start by eliminating unsecured debt and allowing the debtors to get out of large contracts such as mortgages and car finance agreements or leases.
The most commonly filed bankruptcy in the United States is a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, with Chapter 13 being the second most commonly filed.
A Chapter 13 is a reorganization bankruptcy for individuals or a married couple.
Under this Chapter, you propose a plan in which you propose to repay a percentage of your debt to your creditors with the help and protection of the bankruptcy court.
A typical Chapter 13 repayment plan will last for three to five years and the percentage paid to unsecured creditors varies from 0% to 100%.
The Detroit Bankruptcy Court is located at 211 West Fort Street in Downtown Detroit.
341 Meetings are held on the 3rd Floor and the Bankruptcy Judges as well as the clerks office is located in the upper level floors 17 through 19.
Most of my clients live in metro Detroit and therefore must attend their court hearing in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan located in downtown Detroit.
The court is located at 211 West Fort Street, Detroit MI 48226 just one-block from my main office.
