In 1998, the firm of Stokes & Fansler dissolved due to the ascension of Daryl Fansler to the office of Chancellor, Knox County Chancery Court.
Soon thereafter, Billy J. Stokes, Herbert B. Williams, Robert R. Davies and Jon M. Cope continued the firm's practice as Stokes & Williams.
In 1999, Ellis A. (Sandy) Sharp and Mary Jo Mann resigned their shareholder positions at the Knoxville firm of Lewis, King, Krieg & Waldrop, P.C. (now Lewis Thomason) and merged their practices with Stokes & Williams.
