James J. Burnett is a civil trial lawyer with more than thirty years of experience in state and federal courts throughout Texas, Arizona, California and Florida. In addition to a broad civil litigation background, James has extensive experience in chemical, energy and technology litigation. After graduating from law school, James worked as a briefing attorney for the First Court of Appeals in downtown Houston.
James then joined Haynes & Fullenweider, PLLC before leaving and eventually starting his own firm. Frequent lecturer in litigation and ethics at Houston Bar Association continuing legal education functions. I believe that an attorney's most important purpose is to help his clients in understanding what the client wants, to explain how the legal system works, and to help his clients find effective ways to achieve their goals.
Cost effectiveness is a major part of that endeavor. I will explain what your options are, what they might cost, and what consequences you might face from your decisions, and I will help you in every reasonable way to find an effective solution to your legal needs.

My law license says that I am an Attorney and Counselor at Law.
I take those words very seriously.
They mean different but important things to me.
As your attorney, I am your advocate, and it is my job to present your claim, defend you against other people's claims, and advance your position in negotiations and dispute resolutions, and before judges, juries and other authorities.
As your counselor, my job is to give you the best independent legal advice, but it's something more, too.
As your counselor, I strive to work in a closely integrated way with you and your personnel and with your other independent support professionals (e.g., accountants, financial planners, engineers, etc.) so that we all keep our focus on the most important concern, which is advancing your business goals in the most time- and cost-effective, legal and successful manner.

You need guidance in forming, maintaining and operating your business as a legal entity and protecting yourself from the legal risks of business.
You would rather spend your time on your product and on your market than on legal and administrative quicksand.
The real question is what kind of attorney you need.
The answer is: An attorney who understands things not just from the legal, but from the business perspective.
You need someone who will work with you, not as some distant, remote "expert" but as a fully integrated member of your team.
