This concern leads to efforts to assure that each child, no matter where he or she is situated, receives a free and appropriate education (FAPE).
Laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 establish processes for evaluating a child's needs and for providing an individualized education program (IEP) and/or "504" plans.
