In 1939, Bakersfield was a typical small town, rich in family values and community pride.
Agriculture and oil created many jobs and offered an economic foundation for the city and Kern County.
Newcomer Joseph Wooldridge had just passed the California State Bar examination and was working downtown in the Haberfelde Building as an insurance adjuster.
Kern County native John Young, an attorney with a small office down the hall, met Wooldridge while pursuing a claim for an injured client.
The two hit it off immediately.

Young Wooldridge, LLP is seeking an Associate Attorney with approximately 2-5 years of litigation and/or transactional experience to join one of Kern County's largest Water and Special Districts departments.
Steve is a Managing Partner at Young Wooldridge, LLP, and has been a member of the firm's Water Law and Special Districts Department for 27 years.
Steve's specialized practice has focused on working with numerous water agencies locally and throughout the State.
Steve provides both general counsel and litigation services for his clients, which include water districts, SGMA Groundwater Sustainability Agencies, and Joint Powers Authorities, with groundwater banking projects and surface supplies from various rivers and the state (SWP) and federal (CVP) water projects.
Jerry Pearson is a Partner at Young Wooldridge, LLP, and a member of the firm's Business Department.
He was born in Torrance, Calif., but grew up in Fresno where he also attended college.
He received his bachelor's degree in history from California State University Fresno and his Juris Doctorate from San Joaquin College of Law, also in Fresno.
Jerry's practice is limited solely to representing management in labor and employment law issues and making sure his clients stay in compliance with the State and Federal labor laws.
Ned Dunphy was born in New York, but moved to Toronto, Canada when he was a young child.
He attended school in Canada and one year at the University of Toronto.
In 1983, he accepted an invitation from Cesar Chavez to attend a law school program established under the authority of the California State Bar's Law Office Study program.
Ned studied law and worked under the supervision of the union's General Counsel, doing labor negotiations, contract administration and arbitration.
In 1987, Ned passed the California Bar Exam and was admitted to practice law.
