An absolute divorce is the legal termination of a marriage.
North Carolina is considered a "no-fault" state, meaning that a person does not have to allege any marital misconduct such as adultery, cruel and abusive behavior, or economic fault in order to seek an absolute divorce.
In order to obtain an absolute divorce in North Carolina, a person, who has been residing in the state for at least six months, must intend to remain permanently separated from their spouse, and have done so for at least a year prior to the request.
