Lawyers Clearinghouse
The Lawyers Clearinghouse harnesses the power of Massachusetts legal professionals to strengthen communities. We do this by connecting Massachusetts nonprofits and the homeless with pro bono lawyers. With limited resources, we maximize community impact by streamlining the way lawyers volunteer their skills. The Clearinghouse bridges the gap between lawyers who want to volunteer and nonprofits and homeless people who need their help.

Lawyers want to take pro bono cases, but scarcely have the time to research opportunities. Nonprofits need legal help, but can rarely afford an attorney. The homeless and at-risk population needs someone to speak for them. Through our connections to a network of lawyers at top Massachusetts law firms, we serve several communities. We support Massachusetts nonprofits by finding them pro bono lawyers and offering them free legal seminars.

Legal services strengthen their organizations. In turn, they are able to serve their communities better and continue their missions to promote affordable housing, educate local youth, advocate for environmental causes, work to reduce poverty, etc.
Services
The Lawyers Clearinghouse on Affordable Housing and Homelessness was founded in 1988 by the Boston Bar Association and Massachusetts Bar Association.
It grew out of a common belief that through an organized broad based program, the pro bono resources of the private bar could be used to fight homelessness.
The creation of the Clearinghouse also reflected the enormous economic pressures placed on low and moderate income families in Massachusetts, and on the limited capabilities of the nonprofit groups assisting them with their housing needs.
The Lawyers Clearinghouse leverages nearly $8 million in donated legal services each year on a small budget.
This means a gift to the Clearinghouse is worth more than 20 times the amount donated.
Although our budget is small and our organization is efficient with its limited resources, our funding model is changing.
With IOLTA funds dwindling, we now rely on donations from individuals and law firms more than ever.
By giving a gift to the Clearinghouse, you will ensure that homeless and at-risk individuals in the Boston area who have slipped through the cracks of the legal system have access to pro bono lawyers who can help them turn their lives around.
The Lawyers Clearinghouse serves both Massachusetts nonprofits and homeless individuals.
We match nonprofits with pro bono lawyers, host legal workshops for nonprofits, and operate a bi-monthly legal clinic for the homeless.
Our Legal Referral Program matches nonprofits with pro bono attorneys.
The program was designed to help nonprofits with legal needs, while offering quality pro bono opportunities for transactional lawyers to utilize their corporate law related expertise.
Our Legal Referral Program has greatly enhanced the ability of our client nonprofits to move forward with their missions advised by competent legal counsel.

A: The clearinghouse model allows us to operate efficiently and effectively.
By fostering relationships with hundreds of lawyers throughout the Commonwealth, we are able to draw from a large pool of talented lawyers who want to volunteer their time and skills to serve others.
This eliminates our need for a large staff and helps us maximize our impact on a small budget.
