A Last Will & Testament, more commonly referred to as a Will, is the foundation of effective Estate Planning.
If you die without a Will, your estate will be subject to the laws of intestacy.
This simply means you will not have a say in who inherits from your estate.
Instead, your estate will be distributed according to Louisiana law.
However, if you die with a valid Will in place, you control who does and does not inherit from your estate.
Wills don't have to be long and complex.
Often times, a Will needs to only consist of a few pages.

A Trust is a legal relationship between three people: Grantor, Trustee, and Beneficiary.
The relationship is created when the Grantor gives something (money, property, etc.) to the Trustee for the benefit of another, the Beneficiary.
The Trust also sets the rules for the Trustee on how they are to administer the Trust (i.e. when he or she should distribute them to the Beneficiary).
A Trust creates a distinct legal entity that can own property, pay taxes, pass ownership of assets from one generation to the next, and protect assets from creditors.

A Succession is the process of settling a decedent's estate.
It includes identifying the decedent's assets and property, paying all taxes and claims against the estate, and distributing the remaining assets to the decedent's heirs, beneficiaries or legatees.
If a person dies without a Will, an Intestate Succession will be necessary.
If a person dies with a Will, a Testate Succession will be necessary.
